Digital spaces have become central arenas of social discourse, while also serving as echo chambers for hate speech, conspiracy narratives, violent imagery, and extremist content. As part of the conference “Verlockender Fundamentalismus – Continuities and Paradigm Shifts in Research and the Prevention of Islamism,” taking place from June 24 to 25, 2026 in Münster, Josephine B. Schmitt will lead a workshop titled “How do digital media and the use of digital spaces influence pathways into Islamist scenes? What challenges arise from this?” (June 24, 1 PM). The workshop will address current developments and the resulting challenges of digital radicalization processes. A key focus is the question of how prevention approaches can be designed not only to respond to individual trends, but also to sustainably strengthen skills, critical reflection, and democratic resilience in the long term.
The conference is primarily aimed at professionals in school-based and extracurricular education and youth work and is organized by the State Agency for Civic Education North Rhine-Westphalia and ufuq, as part of KN:IX Connect | Network for the Prevention of Islamism and the Promotion of Democracy.
